What Is 4 Leaf Summer Skills Training?

Summer Skills Training is a multi-week evening clinic program — not a one-day event, not a summer camp, and not a travel team practice. It runs on weeknight evenings throughout June and July, giving players a consistent weekly block of focused skill work while keeping weekends and family schedules free.

Sessions split players into two age groups — grades 1–6 in the first time slot, grades 7–12 in the second — so coaching intensity and drill complexity are always appropriate for the players in the session. Each location runs on a slightly different day of the week and price based on the total number of sessions offered.

Who Is Summer Skills Training For?

For New Players: A Safe, Low-Pressure Start

If your child has never played lacrosse or has only played one season, Summer Skills Training is the ideal first step. Sessions are structured, coached, and welcoming — not chaotic pickup. Players learn fundamentals in a supportive environment surrounded by other developing players. There is no competition for spots, no evaluation, and no prior experience required.

For Developing Players: Breaking Through to the Next Level

Players who have one or two travel or town seasons behind them use Summer Skills to work on specific weaknesses, develop consistency, and push their skill ceiling before summer tournaments begin. With coaching staff drawn from 4 Leaf's year-round travel team program, every session pushes players above their current standard.

What Players Work On Each Session

Sessions are coached, structured, and fast-paced — not pickup time in a gym. Every session covers:

  • Stick skills — catching, throwing, cradling, ground balls with position-specific technique
  • Attack fundamentals — dodging, finishing, feeding, off-ball movement
  • Defensive fundamentals — body position, stick checking, footwork, sliding concepts
  • Lacrosse IQ — reading the field, decision-making in small-sided games
  • Small-sided game competition — scrimmages and skill challenges that apply what was drilled

Coaches tailor feedback to each player's level. A first-year player and a returning travel player in the same session will receive different coaching emphasis — the younger player works on fundamentals while the more experienced player gets pushed on reads and positioning.

Frequently Asked Questions — Summer Skills Training

Does my child need prior lacrosse experience to attend Summer Skills Training?

No. Summer Skills Training is explicitly open to new players as well as experienced ones. Our coaches structure each session to work across skill levels — newer players focus on fundamentals while more experienced players get pushed on advanced technique and game reads. No child will feel lost or left behind.

Is Summer Skills Training the same as Summer Day Camp?

No — they are two different products. Summer Day Camp is a four-day full-day program (9 AM–3 PM) that runs for one week and includes non-lacrosse activities, Lacrosse Olympics, flag football, and more. Summer Skills Training is a weekly evening clinic (90 minutes per session) running across multiple weeks, focused entirely on skill development. Many families do both.

Can my child attend sessions in multiple states?

Yes. There is no state restriction. A Vermont family could attend both the Vermont sessions and the Massachusetts sessions in the same summer if the schedule allows. Registration is per session set at each location.

What gear does my child need?

Boys: lacrosse stick, helmet, shoulder pads, arm pads, gloves, mouthguard, and cleats. Girls: lacrosse stick, goggles, gloves, mouthguard, and cleats. Bring a water bottle. If your child is brand new and does not yet own gear, contact drew@4leaflax.org before registering — we may be able to point you toward loaner options.

Is Summer Skills Training open to players from other clubs?

Absolutely. Summer Skills Training is open to any player regardless of what team or organization they play for. Town program players, other club players, and unaffiliated players are all welcome.

What is the difference between Summer Skills Training and Premier Training?

Premier Training is an application-only program for elite players already competing at a travel or high school level. Summer Skills Training is open registration and designed for a much wider range of players — from complete beginners to intermediate club players. If your athlete is in their first or second year of lacrosse, Summer Skills is the right fit. If they have multiple travel seasons behind them, Premier Training may also be worth exploring.
