What Is Sixes Lacrosse? The Format Explained
Sixes is the Olympic format of lacrosse — a 6-on-6 version played on a smaller field with fewer players, a shot clock, and continuous action designed to maximize every player's touches and decision-making reps. It is the same format being played in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and the PLL and World Lacrosse have both committed to it as the future of the sport.
For youth players, Sixes is the most development-dense version of lacrosse you can play. More ball touches per player per game. More dodges, more shots, more saves, more decisions — in half the time of a traditional game.
Sixes vs. Traditional Lacrosse — What's Different

How to Register — Free Agents & Full Teams
There are two ways to join Summer Sixes. Choose the path that fits your situation.
For Free Agents — Register as an Individual
No team? No problem. Free agents register individually and are placed on teams by hometown. This is a great option for players who want to compete all summer without the logistical overhead of forming a team. You will be placed with other players from your area and the same grade division.
For Teams — Register Your Crew
Bringing a group? A team is officially secured once 12 players have registered. Team captains should email Matt Brewster at matt@4leaflax.org to reserve a team spot, then have players register through the link below. If a team does not reach 12 players by the start of the league, free agents may be added or teams may be combined.
What Each Team Needs
- Minimum 12 players to secure a full team spot
- All teams must have a coach present for every game — this is a league requirement
- Coach contact: Email matt@4leaflax.org to submit team name, gender, division, and location
- Players register individually through LeagueApps — all under the same team name

Frequently Asked Questions — Summer Sixes League
What grades can play in the Summer Sixes League?
Summer Sixes is open to boys and girls currently in 3rd through 8th grade (the current school year grade). Players are divided into three divisions: 3rd/4th grade, 5th/6th grade, and 7th/8th grade. Teams and free agents are placed within the appropriate division.
Do players need to be on a 4 Leaf travel team to join?
No. The Summer Sixes League is open to all youth lacrosse players in the region — town program players, club players from any organization, and players with no prior team experience. Many participants have never been part of a 4 Leaf program before. This league is one of the most accessible ways to experience 4 Leaf coaching and culture.
What is the cost to participate in Summer Sixes?
Registration fees are listed on the LeagueApps registration page. Contact matt@4leaflax.org for current pricing or for team registration questions.
Can my child play if they've never played lacrosse before?
Sixes is a development-focused format and is welcoming to newer players. The smaller roster size and higher touches-per-game make it an excellent learning environment. That said, players should have some basic familiarity with the sport. Complete beginners might benefit from attending a summer day camp first — our camps run in June and July across NH, VT, and ME.
What equipment do players need?
Boys need: helmet, shoulder pads, arm pads, gloves, mouthguard, short stick (no long poles in Sixes), and cleats. Girls need: goggles, gloves, mouthguard, stick, and cleats. All participants should bring a water bottle.
What happens if we register as a team but don't reach 12 players?
If a team does not reach the 12-player minimum, 4 Leaf may add free agents to fill the roster, or may combine smaller teams into one. Team captains are encouraged to confirm player registrations early. Contact matt@4leaflax.org if your team is close but needs help filling spots.
Is there a coach requirement for teams?
Yes — all teams are required to have a coach present at every game. This is a non-negotiable league requirement. If you are forming a town or club team, please confirm coaching coverage before registering. Free agents placed on teams will be matched with a coach.
Can my child play in more than one state's league?
Yes. A player can register for the NH league, the Vermont league, and the Maine league independently. Registration is done through the same LeagueApps link. Contact matt@4leaflax.org to discuss multi-state participation.
