Boys Lacrosse Tryouts — NH, Maine & Vermont | 2026–27 Season
4 Leaf Lacrosse boys tryouts for the 2026–27 season are open to players in graduation years 2028 through 2037 across New Hampshire, Maine, Vermont, and Northern Massachusetts. Our two-step evaluation process — Open Tryouts followed by Call Back Tryouts — is designed to give every athlete a fair shot regardless of where they live in New England, while ensuring we build the strongest, most balanced rosters possible
Four Open Tryout locations. One Call Back standard. This is how 4 Leaf builds elite teams — not by geography, but by merit.
The 4 Leaf Tryout Process — Two Steps, One Standard
Every player — new and returning — goes through the same two-step process. There are no guaranteed spots, no legacy placements, and no regional quotas. We evaluate on what we see at the tryout.
STEP 1 |
Open Tryouts — Regional EvaluationHeld at four locations across New England. Players attend one location (or more if they choose). Open Tryouts are an initial evaluation only — they do not guarantee a roster spot or a Call Back invitation. We use Open Tryouts to build a shortlist for stage two. |
STEP 2 |
Call Back Tryouts — One Standard Across All RegionsInvited players from every state compete together at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH. This is where final roster decisions are made. Attendance at both stages is essential — Open Tryouts alone do not determine selection. |
2026 Open Tryout Schedule — Dates, Locations & Grad Years
Choose the location most convenient for your family. Players may attend more than one Open Tryout location — attending multiple sites does not hurt and may be beneficial if scheduling allows.

Step 2: Call Back Tryouts — Exeter, NH | July 21–22
Call Back Tryouts bring invited players from all four states together at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH. This is the definitive evaluation stage — where our coaching staff can compare players across regions on a level field and build balanced, competitive rosters. Attendance at Call Backs is HIGHLY RECCOMENDED for roster consideration.
Why Call Backs Matter
Open Tryouts give us a wide look at regional talent. Call Backs give us one consistent standard across all four states. Without Call Backs, a standout from Vermont would be compared to Vermont players only — and a standout from NH would never compete alongside him. Call Backs make our teams genuinely New England-wide, not regional.

What Evaluators Are Looking For at Boys Tryouts
Our coaching staff is looking for more than stick skills. The 4 Leaf evaluation is holistic — we assess athleticism, lacrosse IQ, coachability, and competitive character alongside position-specific technique.
On-field evaluation areas
- Athletic ability — footwork, speed, change of direction, physicality for age group
- Lacrosse fundamentals — catching, throwing, cradling, ground balls
- Lacrosse IQ — reads, positioning, decision-making under pressure
- Position-specific skills — evaluated based on where the player wants to compete
- Competitive effort — do they play hard every rep, regardless of the score?
Character evaluation
4 Leaf coaches pay close attention to how players handle pressure, instruction, and adversity during tryouts. A player who coasts through Open Tryouts and turns it on for Call Backs tells us something. A player who competes at the same level from first whistle to last whistle tells us something different. Both things matter.

Frequently Asked Questions — Boys Tryouts
Do players need to attend all four Open Tryout locations?
No. Players must attend at least one Open Tryout location. You can choose whichever location is most convenient — Amesbury MA, Hooksett NH, Williston VT, or Portland ME. Players may also attend multiple Open Tryout locations if they wish.
Do returning 4 Leaf players still need to try out?
Yes. All players — new and returning — go through the same two-step tryout process each season. There are no guaranteed spots based on prior participation. This ensures every roster is built on current performance and keeps the program's competitive standard high.
What happens if my child attends Open Tryouts but is not invited to Call Backs?
Open Tryouts are an initial evaluation only and do not guarantee roster placement or a Call Back invitation. If your athlete is not invited to Call Backs, our coaching staff can provide general feedback on next steps. Families with specific questions should contact matt@4leaflax.org directly.
What grad years are eligible to try out?
4 Leaf fields teams for graduation years 2028 through 2038 — covering approximately 2nd grade through 12th grade.
Can my child try out even if they play for another club?
Yes. The tryout process is open to any player who meets the graduation year requirements. You do not need prior 4 Leaf experience. Many players come from town programs, other clubs, or no prior travel team experience at all.
What should my child wear and bring to tryouts?
Full boys lacrosse gear is required. Stick, helmet, shoulder pads, arm pads, gloves, mouthguard, and cleats. Bring a water bottle. Arrive 15-20 minutes early to check in with the coaching staff.
What if we have a serious scheduling conflict with Call Backs?
Contact us in advance — not after the fact. We handle scheduling conflicts on a case-by-case basis and alternative evaluations are not guaranteed. Email matt@4leaflax.org as early as possible if you have a conflict.
When are tryout results announced?
Results are communicated after Call Back Tryouts are complete. Players who attended Call Backs will hear from the coaching staff regarding roster decisions. We do not announce results publicly.
Are 4 Leaf boys teams boys-only?
Yes. 4 Leaf fields separate boys and girls travel programs with dedicated coaching staffs. Boys tryouts evaluate boys players only. If you are looking for girls lacrosse tryout information, visit the Girls Tryouts page.
Is there a cost to attend tryouts?
Registration for tryouts is handled through LeagueApps. Any tryout fee information will be listed on the registration page. Contact matt@4leaflax.org with fee questions before registering.
