Why the Draw Is the Most Important Skill in Girls Lacrosse

  • Every goal scored is preceded by a possession — and every possession following a score begins with a draw
  • Elite draw specialists are among the most actively recruited players in girls high school lacrosse
  • The draw is the only moment in the game where a single player can directly create an immediate scoring opportunity for their team
  • Most programs practice the draw for 10–15 minutes per week — Draw Summit gives specialists a dedicated 90-minute session
  • Draw skill is highly coachable — players who train the draw weekly show measurable improvement within 4–6 sessions

What Players Work On at Draw Summit

Draw Mechanics — Setup, Release, Elevation

  • Proper hand position and stick angle at the set position
  • Release timing — when to pull up versus push through
  • Elevation control — directing the draw to a teammate vs. controlling the ground ball
  • Body positioning and footwork at the draw circle

Reading Your Opponent's Tendencies

  • Pre-snap reads — what does the opposing draw player's setup tell you?
  • Adjusting technique mid-session based on opponent's dominant move
  • Defensive positioning at the draw when not taking the draw

Draw Control vs. Draw Possession

  • The difference between winning a draw and winning possession — and why they are not the same thing
  • Wing positioning and ground ball routes to convert a won draw into possession
  • Communication between the draw player and wings before each draw

Live Draw Repetitions Against Real Opponents

Every session includes live draw repetitions — player vs. player at full speed with wings in position. Improvement requires live reps, not just mechanics drills. Coaches provide feedback between and during reps.

Frequently Asked Questions — Draw Summit

Is the Draw Summit only for dedicated draw specialists?

No. Any girls lacrosse player in grades 5–12 who wants to improve their draw can attend. Many players who attend are midfielders who take draws at the youth level rather than full-time draw specialists. The skills developed at Draw Summit — reading opponents, explosive movement, possession control — benefit all positions.

Do I need to be on a 4 Leaf girls team to attend?

No. The Draw Summit is open to any girls lacrosse player in grades 5–12 from any program. Town players, club players from other organizations, and high school players are all welcome.

What gear does my daughter need to bring?

Full girls lacrosse gear: stick, goggles, gloves, mouthguard, and cleats or turf shoes appropriate for indoor turf. Bring a water bottle.

Are college players really coaching at Draw Summit?

Yes. The Draw Summit is co-staffed by 4 Leaf coaches and local college lacrosse players and coaches. This gives participants direct access to players who are actively taking draws at a high collegiate level — which is a significant advantage over training with coaches who have not played the position recently.

Is there a session in New Hampshire?

Currently the Draw Summit runs in Amesbury MA only. Contact fitzgerald@4leaflax.org if you are interested in a New Hampshire Draw Summit session — demand drives location expansion.
